New Mexico

You might be interested in my new book: Final Rights. It has a chapter on the laws in every state, written in plain English. You can find it on the home page of funerals.org In New Mexico, you can be buried at home on rural land. But you must first contact the county clerk to record the burial site on the plat/deed, the site must be 50 yards from a stream or pond, and at least five feet from the property line. While nothing in NM law talks about funeral pyres, it’s likely that would provoke the ire of county officials and neighbors, which would create a backlash against home and family-directed funerals. Not because it would hurt anyone, but because people freak out at unusual death practices.
