Two men paid to transport bodies for the Kern County coroner’s office were allegedly stealing money off the bodies instead, according to a sheriff’s department news release.

Christopher Wesley Leake, 34, and Crescencio Reynosa, 20, were arrested Thursday in connection with the thefts, according to the release. As of 5:30 p.m., neither man was listed as being in custody, according to the sheriff’s department’s website.

The two men were employed by Premier Transportation Inc., which contracts with the coroner’s office to transport bodies, the news release said. The management of the company has been cooperative, and there is nothing to indicate other employees were involved in the thefts, according to the news release.
