THOUGHTFUL MUSINGS FROM A FUNERAL DIRECTOR

[For a deathcare industry to] … tell a family that they cannot take part in the final aspects of the funeral is to remove a piece of their opportunity to say goodbye. It also removes their agency. It is their right to make a decision for themselves as to what they want and don’t want in terms of handling the difficult parts of the funeral. This should not be a choice I or any other person makes for them, especially with the excuse that it is for their own good. While I advocate for simpler and more natural funerals, I would never presume to tell a family that they should do things the way I find healthiest. What I can do, is open up options so they have the choice. And in the same regard, cemeteries and crematories should open this choice to the family, and not force them into situations that steal their agency.
