Cremation rates in the United States have been rising in recent years. From looking at statistics and dealing directly with families selecting cremation, I can see many reasons for this. There are US immigrants for whom cremation is the traditional form of final disposition, an increase in religious practices that accept cremation as acceptable, and families that have spread out across the country and no longer feel connected to a specific location. And because of the mobility of the modern culture, cremated remains have a portability not found with a cemetery plot. Then there is the cost savings, which is what I would like to address today.
