Funeral homes are required by the FTC's Funeral Rule to provide you with a copy of their current General Price List, and other lists, depending on what type of product or service you are considering, such as a coffin (Coffin Price List) and in-ground vault (Outer Burial Vault Price List). While the article How To Read a General Price List will help understand what your rights are, and what to look for in reading price lists and talking to funeral directors, trying to keep all these things in mind when you are trying to make arrangements for someone who just died can be difficult. That may not be the time you want to concern yourself with comparison shopping, or you may feel uncomfortable delaying making the arrangements while you try to carefully go through the price lists and consider all the options available to you - some of which your funeral director may not tell you about. Thus, the best time to seriously think about funeral arrangements is well before death. Whether you are planning what arrangements and things you do--and do not--want, or seeking to get a clear idea of what a loved one wants, as difficult as it may at first seem to do this when death is but a distant specter, it truly is far easier than doing it in the hours after death has occurred. The following price lists were compiled by the Redwood Funeral Society in Summer/Fall 2007. For ease in printing, these lists are available in PDF format.
